2011 Jogja NETPAC Asian Film Festival

Aditya Friday December 23, 2011

In this year’s Jogja NETPAC Asian Film Festival, the following feature films were considered for the NETPAC Award – Oxygen(Mongolia), Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria (The Dream of Eleuteria / Philippines), Winter Vacation (China), Rakenrol (Philippines), Year without a Summer (Malaysia), Tanda Tanya (Question Mark/ Indonesia), and Bi, Don’t Be Afraid (Vietnam).

The jury cited the effectiveness of the one-shot feature of Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria in capturing the conflict within Terya who is in a quandary whether to accept the arranged marriage and leave for Germany or stay in a seemingly forsaken island. Another film that figured prominently in the deliberation is Winter Vacation, a deliberately slow drag (bordering on the absurd) that focuses on adolescent kids in the last days of a winter vacation. Finally, the jury agreed to give the award to Oxygen(35mm/75mts/2010 Mongolian, with EST) ,a first feature film by Janchivdorj Sengedorj, a filmmaker from Mongolia and produced by Zaya Jamsran.

Jury’s Citation:  The NETPAC Award is given to the film Oxygen by Janchivdorj Sengedorj for its excellence in handling the confrontation between the urban jungle and the Gobi desert, between the lost man and the life-giving nomadic woman, between art and ethnography.

The festival also featured other feature films and a collection of short films from Asia.

There is a special section of films from Kyrgyzstan.
