Short but not short

BISFF is one of the earliest and first short film festivals in Korea, launched in 1980, it’s aspire to aesthetics in short films and has firmly established itself as the place to discover new talented directors. They also brought the world’s latest and hidden shorts in spotlight in terms; BISFF is a remarkable opportunity for the directors in national and around the world.  It is small but powerful and becoming more and more the most coveted short film festival in Asia.

This year the guest country is the land of music - Austria and there not only the Austrian Experimental shorts and Austrian musical shorts. But also the Landscapes of the Asian Shorts, Shorts for family and close up animation Special, the curtain call section, screening the best films from other film festivals around the world gave the full of the artistry and essence of short films.

BISFF is a competitive film festival and shows 54 films selected by preliminary juries among nearly 5000 admissions at Busan Cinema Centre. As an international short film festival that is rare in Korea, it provides an opportunity to enjoy prominent international films made in the year before. It also discovers new talents and films in Korea and introduce to them to international stage.

Another notable section is Operation Kino, selected from the most outstanding films among college students work supported by production funds for film & media majors in Busan.

Generally films expressed the lot of problems that we face in the present society and approach these issues in a number of ways. The films focus on everyday problems to weighty social issues such as problem of refugees, conflict, race, religion, human rights, sexual minority  and individual moment of crisis, family and accommodation.

Another important thing is BISFF became the second short film festival in Asia joined NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema), and launched the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Short Film. The NETPAC Award has gone to Seol-hee (Korea/2016) directed by Bae Yeonhee depicting painful memories of mentally handicapped girl. The jury was consisted with Kim Yi-seok (Korea), Sakano Yuka (Japan) and Ranjanee Ratnavibhushana (Sri Lanka). The citation given by the jury is “Seol-hee reveals our naked face through a girl who ignores a friend in danger. This film delivers strong message in a simple style.”

Eden (Colombia) directed by Andres Ramirez Pulido bagged the Grand Prix for Best Picture in the International Competition and Tenderness (Poland)  by Emilia Zielonka was awarded the Excellence Award for best picture and A Women and Her Car (Canada) by Loic Darses received the jury prize. 

In Korean Competition category Deer Flower (Korea/USA), an experimental animation directed by Kim Kangmin was awarded the Grand Prix for Best Picture (Most Outstanding Film), From Now on by Lee Kyeongwon awarded the Excellence Award for Best Picture and Jury Prize went to Bargain by Lee Chunghyun.

Operation Kino sponsored by Junggu District Office, Busan Metropolitan City, among college students work, SeongOK directed by Kim Noheul and Underpass Market by Choi Hyeonji were awarded Grand Prix and Excellence Award respectively.

In conclusion, I like to mention another important event was in the festival, BISFF Asian Short Film Forum and Busan International Trans media Forum.
