Synopsis
Ranga, a farm hand who is working to clear his debt, succumbs to an illness that leaves him incapacitated. It is now up to Subba, the son, to repay his father’s debt. Subba’s carefree existence, roaming the hills and valleys, is disrupted, and he begins to lose his innocence and cheerfulness. His easygoing friendship with Oba, the landlord’s son, is tainted by feudal undertones. No longer are the two boys equals who play and frolic in the woods and the streams. SAALADA MAGU is a look at the web of debt and feudal authority that draws people into a deadly spiral, despite the bounty of nature.
