Satyajit Ray Memorial Award to Dr. Aruna Vasudev

Founder of NETPAC, Cinemaya The Asian Film Quarterly and Cinefan, The Festival of Asian Cinema, Aruna Vasudev will be honoured with the “Satyajit Ray Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Writing on Cinema” by FIPRESCI India. FIPRESCI India is the national chapter of FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) headquartered in Munich, Germany. Aruna Vasudev, who has a doctorate from the University of Paris, will be the first recipient of this award which will be conferred on her later this year.  It has been instituted only recently to commemorate the birth centenary of Satyajit Ray’s this year.Winner of multiple prizes, both national and international including Officier des Arts et des Lettres given by the French Government, the Italian Star of Solidarity and the Korean Cinema Award as well as several Lifetime Achievement Awards), Aruna Vasudev was instrumental in setting up (with eminent critic and author Chidananda Dasgupta) the India chapter of FIPRESCI in 1992. A versatile writer, editor and co-editor of several books and countless articles, She has written, edited and co-edited many books, articles, essays on cinema including Liberty and License in the Indian Cinema (1978), Indian Cinema Superbazaar (1983), Les cinemas indiens (published in French, 1984). Frames of Mind: Reflections on Indian Cinema (1996), Being and Becoming: The Cinemas of Asia (2002), Modernity and Nationality in Vietnamese Cinema (2007), Kenji Mizoguchi and the Art of Japanese Cinema (2008). In 2001, Macmillan India published In Search of the Mahabharata: Travels in India with Peter Brook (2001), Aruna’s translation of Jean - Claude Carrière’s  A la Recherche du Mahabharata.   She has also contributed scores of articles and essays on cinema to many national and international books and journals, and was the series editor of six books on great Indian actors: P.C. Barua, Sivaji Ganeshan, Shammi Kapoor, Mehboob Khan, Sohrab Modi and Guru Dutt. For a few years she wrote a regular column for The Hindustan Times, The Asian Age apart from articles in journals and books in India and in Europe. Aruna Vasudev has also made around 20 documentary films – all in India - as producer/director for Swedish Television, the Canadian International Development Agency, Belgian Television, War on Want, London, and in India for the Films Division,  Doordarshan and  INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage), New Delhi.NETPAC extends sincere congratulations to Aruna Vasudev for the award she has received for her extensive work in the field of cinema, and wishes her many more years of success. --- Latika Padgaonkar and Rashmi Doraiswamy worked with Aruna Vasudev to give birth toCinemaya. We were also closely involved in the setting up of NETPAC. Indu Shrikent joined us thereafter and worked in both Cinemaya and the Cinefan Festival. Aruna and I edited two books together. It has been a wonderful journey of laughter, togetherness and discovery of Asian cinema and of the new worlds they opened up for us.

1. I entered the cinema through the theatre. I was an actor in our local theatre called Kanibadam, named after Tuhfa Fozilova. After working for five years, I decided to do a theatre director course. I graduated with honors and became a director. We successfully staged performances at international festivals.
