NETPAC Award Winner picked for distribution by CJ Entertainment

Aditya Sunday March 1, 2009

Korean Director Baek Seung-bin's debut feature Members of the Funeral has been picked up for worldwide distribution by CJ Entertainment, one of Korea's leading distributors. The film had its world premiere last year at the Pusan International Film Festival, where it received the NETPAC Award, and had its international premiere at the Forum section of this year's Berlinale.

The film centres on what takes place when a high school student, Hee-joon, dies and the different members of a family come together at his funeral - each unaware of what kind of relationship the others had with the dead boy. They soon find out that he knew each of them intimately enough to be writing a novel about them, before he committed suicide.

The film was a part of the Korean Academy of Film Arts' (KAFA) inaugural program of feature-length graduation films, and initially got support funds from CJ Cultural Foundation and the exhibitor CJ CGV, both affiliates of CJ Entertainment. This is the first time CJ Entertainment has taken on sales of a KAFA film. The company noted that they made the decision on the strength of the film and director's potential, as well as the importance of supporting independent cinema.
