The film will screen at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT) at the penthouse floor of Maneeya Bldg in Chidlom. The award-winning Mendoza will be present during the screening along with Dr. Aruna Vasudev, founder and president of the India-based NETPAC.

Admission is free for FCCT members; THB 150 for non-members.

“Foster Child,” courtesy of Centre Stage Productions, is a simple and moving story of Thelma, who with her husband and two teenage sons are a poor urban family, hired by a local foster care facility to provide a temporary home for abandoned babies until they are formally adopted. The abandoned baby in this case is the adorable John-John, whom Thelma lovingly feeds, bathes, and takes to school on her last day with him before his adoption by a wealthy American family.

The first part of the film captures the urban chaos of Manila, as Thelma navigates the busy streets of the city chatting with everyone she sees, exhibiting her large heart and caring nature. Then she goes home, and finishes all of John-John’s chores, before she goes to the luxury hotel, to leave him with the American family. The diverse scenarios and tones almost divide the film into two halves. The happy, cheerful caring Thelma is broken when she’s separated from her foster child.

Mendoza is a globally renowned indie filmmaker whose strong, socially relevant movies have won awards at top festivals including Cannes, Berlin and Venice. ‘Foster Child’ won many awards, including the NETPAC Award at the Brisbane International Film Festival. The director will be available for a Q&A portion after the screening.

Dr. Vasudev, who has written many books on Asian cinema, served on the Juries of 40 international film festivals, and has won many international awards.

NETPAC is composed of well-known filmmakers, artists and critics, and others who serve on NETPAC juries at more than 40 film festivals around the world

The film event is co-sponsored by Kuwait Airways and the Rembrandt Hotel, as well as Bacardi and Indiatique Restaurant, which will host a Cocktail Reception prior to the film screening.

The event is part of FCCT’s Contemporary World Film Series.
