Studenthttp://www.netpacasia.org/winfilm.aspx?g=271 (Kazakhstan/35mm/90 mins/color/2012) Directed by: Darejan Omirbaev (Kazakhstan)

NETPAC Jury Latika Padgaonkar (Chairperson, India)  Maxine Williamson (Australia)  Rada Sesic (Netherlands)

Citation: For its narrative at once simple and complex, for its imperceptibly layered characterization that is grounded as much in real social situations as in abstraction, all conveyed with the same imperceptible cinematic strength.

Synopsis The film is based on the motives of Feodor Dostoevsky's novel "Crime and Punishment". The action is transferred to modern Kazakhstan. The protagonist is a student of philosophy who rents a room from an old woman in a susurb of Almaty; he suffers from loneliness and lack of money. He is surrounded by an atmosphere of poverty and an ideology of total competition where people are divided into rich and poor, strong and weak. And he gradually gets the idea of robbing a grocery store where he sometimes buys bread.
